I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, OIF Veteran, currently in practice in California. I am a retired Navy Commander and started out my service as a Navy Special Operations Officer-Diving Officer on USS AJAX. I did a lateral transfer within the Navy and became a Supply Corps Officer, serving as the Stores Officer and later Food Service Officer on USS SIMON LAKE. After my marriage to another Navy Officer (And still married 33 years later with 3 wonderful daughters!), I resigned from the Navy and went back to graduate school to obtain my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

I returned to active duty as a Medical Service Corps Officer and served as the first Ship’s Psychologist on USS CONSTELLATION as part of the ‘Psychologists at Sea Demonstration Project,’ and first Psychologist on USS JOHN C. STENNIS. I served three tours with Marines in the U.S. and Iraq and Joint Service Duty with the Army in Iraq. After retiring from Active Duty, I transitioned to contract work with the military at several bases and maintain a private practice.
I have worked with Special Forces throughout my career (embedded psychologist at AFSOC, Hurlburt Field, FL, 8th Special Operations Squadron (Ospreys) and at David Grant USAF Medical Center, Travis AFB, CA, before transferring back to NMCSD in January 2016.

I was the first US Psychologist to become EMDRIA Certified in EMDR while on active duty, and the first person in the world to provide EMDR over Video Tele-Conference, as part of a Navy Pilot Program. In addition to clinical work I have given numerous professional leadership and military presentations (for junior personnel to Generals) on resilience building for families, ethics and leadership, and prevention and treatment of trauma.

I have taught my original theory of Planned Dream Intervention® to thousands of individuals in the US, Germany, France, England, Canada, Italy, Zimbabwe, India, Canada, Australia, Ukraine and Iraq, who have experienced rapid resolution of recurring dreams and nightmares, and have taught my Instructor’s Course for No More Nightmares” to over a thousand health care providers world-wide, who also have a very high level of success assisting others to resolve nightmares.

What People Are Saying

I finished reading this two weeks ago...no more nightmares, no more waking up screaming, no more being afraid to fall asleep. I've recommended it to 3 other people I know with insomnia issues because the section on how to calm a Busy Brain worked great for me, in addition to stopping my nightmares. I've had 7 years of sleep problems, diagnosed as PTSD from an abusive marriage. This book has literally changed my life.

Dr. Dexter's Planned Dream Intervention (PDI) therapy has been truly life changing for me. I had nightmares and had not slept through an entire night for years until utilizing Dr. Dexter's PDI therapy. PDI is truly ground-breaking and will hopefully become the standard for the DOD Therapist in helping Troops suffering from symptoms of PTSD. I also believe that Law Enforcement Agencies would greatly benefit by affording their personnel that are involved in Critical Incidents the opportunity to partake in PDI Therapy.

Dr. Dexter has broken new ground addressing sleep issues. I have the pleasure of using Dr. Dexter's Planned Dream Intervention on a daily basis for the past few years both for myself and as a therapist on several hundred military and civilian persons. I use it for myself at times when I am not able to fall asleep or wake up from a fresh nightmare from my experiences in Viet Nam. Each and every time the nightmare protocols allow me a restful night of sleep which stays with me well into the future. As for me, the results have been the same for those I have treated who suffer from sleep loss as a result from WWII to current war experiences or any other non-combat experience such as from a motor vehicle accident. Because of the rich and easy to follow clinical material, straight forward presentation of rich insight as well as instructive reading for those that suffer form sleep deprivation due to the inability to fall asleep or waking up from nightmares this book is a remarkable resource to read alone or with a therapist. For therapist who want to help their patients this book is an invaluable resource for sound strategies applied to times, places and it is timeless, innovative and current. Buy it! You won't be disappointed neither will those who will benefit with your guidance.

I read Dr. Dexter's comments online on a PTSD forum, and she was nice enough to send me a copy. Her book is simple to read but deep in its practical applications. Her solution of using PDI and Emotional Volume to calm and prevent nightmares from happening is helpful. I used the section in the back of the book to journal 5 pages of my dreams, and I have started to use it at work as well. I recommend this to anyone having nightmares or helping those who do.
